I don’t condone alcoholism in any way, shape or form, but there are some people who are connessieurs of various things. Food, sauces, drinks, basically anything with variety has someone who is interested in learning and experiencing the different nuances of each example. I didn’t even know there were 101 different whiskies available, but if Dad is a connessieur, then this might be something he’ll enjoy. Just make sure he doesn’t try to do this in one night.

Prank book

With April 1st so close, it’s time to think of practical jokes and pranks for our loved ones. Dad is a huge practical joker, so I sent him a link to this prank book. It appears to be inspired by all the crazy things that go on during the college years.

Diary

Diaries and journals are interesting creatures. Girls keep a diary of all their school crushes, but grown men keep journals to catalogue their life experiences. My Dad and I have been to many sporting events, music concerts and other special occasions that require tickets for admission. This ticket stub diary give us both a place to keep our ticket stubs to help us tell the stories of our exploits.

Love Book

It’s hard in my family to express our true feelings for each other. We’ve just never been a family that was able to verbalize it. We all know we love each other and the way we act around everyone is proof, but the verbal reinforcement is not really there. I’m going to try getting Dad a personalized love book for Valentine’s Day so he can know how I really feel about him.

Magazine subscription

This is really a good idea of your father likes to read periodicals or keep current on news in a particular topic. There are magazine subscriptions for almost anything at this point. If your dad likes sports, get him ESPN the Magazine. If he likes science, try Popular Science. You can really make this a personalized gift.

Mad Libs

I don’t care how old you get, Mad Libs are fun. You can buy a book of them, make up your own, whatever you like. And if there is a theme, that can be even more fun. Most everyone likes Shrek and sharing Mad Libs with these characters makes a car ride of any length really short.

American Pickers newspaper

If Dad is a history buff like mine, then anything with historic value interests him. This is a copy of the newspaper circulated when JFK was assassinated in 1963. The guys offering it are from the American Pickers show on the History Channel.

E-Reader

Dad loves to read, and one of his favorite activities is to read during a long trip. What makes this reader great is that now he can read more than one book with this e-reader. Amazon’s kindle has about a 10″ screen for easy reading and can store up to 3,500 books. That should keep Dad occupied while he rides cross country.

The Art of War

There’s a classic book on that philosophy of war written by a Chinese author Sun-Tzu. The concepts and ideas he articulates have been used in other conflicts since. Sun-Tzu shows amazing insight into the human mind when it comes to war and conflict, and if your father is fascinated with history and warfare, then he will probably find this book hard to resist.
